Alfredo meets Violetta at a party in her salon and falls in love with her. Violetta, a Parisian courtesan and lady of society, returns his love. She turns her back on a glamorous life and withdraws from Paris to a country estate with Alfredo.
While Alfredo is away, his father Giorgio Germont arrives. He wants her to break up with her son, since his daughter’s fiancé would never accept a marriage due to her brother’s disgraceful liaison. Violetta, who is already seriously ill with tuberculosis, declares highly grieved that she will leave Alfredo. She writes him a letter declaring that she wants to return to her old life. Alfredo, who doesn’t know the backgrounds, is deeply wounded and wants to take revenge. He appears at a ball in which Violetta also takes part. On this occasion he makes humiliating remarks about Violetta. He throws even money at her feet saying that he has paid now for her services. Violetta faints and sinks to the ground.
Germont reproaches his son severely. His guilty conscience is moving him and he decides to visit Violetta. He has told his son the background and Alfredo hurries to Violettas house. There he asks Violetta for forgiveness and again declares his love. They dream briefly of their future, but Violetta is already deadly ill. Germont blesses their love. Violetta hands Alfredo an amulet in memory of her and falls down dead.
