Synopsis
The Scottish noble families Lammermoor and Ravenswood are enemies. Enrico stole the goods from Edgardo’s father. Lucia, the sister of Count Ashton of Lammermoor, the heir of Ravenswood, has fallen in love with Edgardo. Enrico learns that the two meet frequently. He wants Lucia to marry the powerful Arturo. Edgardo has to travel to France on a political mission. The two exchange rings as tokens of fidelity.
During Edgardo’s absence Enrico intercepts his correspondence to Lucia. He hands Lucia forged letters, which prove that Edgardo loves someone else. Now Lucia, humiliated, agrees to the wedding with Arturo, because Enrico shows her the political necessity. The wedding celebration takes place and Edgardo bursts into the celebrations. He is stunned by Lucia’s betrayal. He throws the ring in front of her feet, attacks Enrico with his sword, but has to give way to the superiority. He leaves the castle demanding a duel. Edgardo and Enrico agree on a duel the following morning. Lucia loses her mind and kills Arturo during the celebrations. Then, she appears in front of the guests with bloodstained clothes and a knife in her hand. She fantasizes and finally collapses.
Edgardo on his way back learns about it and hurries to the castle. Before he arrives at the castle, the death bell rings - Lucia is dead. Then Edgardo kills himself to be united with Lucia in death.
