The Synopsis

Nabucco king of Babylon defeated the Hebrews. They lament their fate. The priest Zaccharia encourages them, because the daughter of Nabucco, the king of Babylon, is in their hand. Ismail is guarding her. He knows Fenena from his Babylonian captivity and loves her. Fenena had helped him escape. Now he wants to help. As they flee, Abigail, Nabucco’s daughter, enters the temple with Babylonian warriors. Abigail confesses her love to Ismail and offers salvation if Ismail returns her love. Ismail refuses. Zaccharia threatens Fenena with a knife, but Ismail saves her. Nabucco appears and orders the punishment of the Hebrews.

In the palace of Babylon: Abigail learns from a secret paper of her true origin as a slave. While Nabucco continues the war against the Hebrews, Fenena is the regent in Babylon. Abigail wants to take revenge on Fenena and ascend the throne herself. In the meantime Fenena has converted to the Jewish faith. When Abigail wants to realize her plan, Nabucco appears. As the winner of the war, he declares himself king and god of the people. Lightning rips the crown from his head. Abigail puts on the crown.

The mad Nabucco lets the king’s seal be snatched from him. Abigail can take revenge on Fenena with it. Nabucco recognizes his mistake and wants to expose Abigail as a slave, to deny her legitimation as Queen. In vain. Meanwhile the Hebrews sing about their homeland and ask for God’s help.

Fenena is brought to the execution. The captured Nabucco sinks to his knees and implores the God of the Hebrews.
