The Synopsis
THE PROLOGUE: An old count has two little sons. A gypsy prophesies the future for one of these sons. The son falls sick. Out of revenge the count orders the gypsy be burned at the stake. The daughter of the gypsy, Azucena, kidnaps the son of the count but accidentally kills her own child. She decides to keep the count’s child. She calls him Manrico and he grows up with the putative mother Azucena.
Many years later: Manrico, disguised as a troubadour, falls in love with the palace lady Leonora, who lives at the court of the Conte di Luna, the second son of the old count. Leonora returns the feelings. The Conte di Luna is also in love with Leonora. The two rivals for Leonora do not know they are brothers. Moreover they are political rivals. When Manrico secretly visits Leonora in the Count’s palace, they encounter and Luna challenges Enrico to a duel. Manrico wins, but doesn’t kill the Count. He must flee when soldiers arrive.
Back in the gypsy camp, Manrico learns from his mother Azucena the story from Azucena’s mother and that he is not her biological son. A messenger reports that the Conte di Luna has been appointed commander of the opposing war party and that the Conte has told Leonora that Manrico has died. Leonora then wants to enter the monastery. Manrico hurries to the monastery and prevents her to take the veil just in time. The Conte appears and after a short fight Manrico can bring Leonora safely to his home.
The conte di Luna attacks the fortress of Manrico. Manrico defends as leader. Azucena is captured by the count and taken hostage. The count threatens death at the stake. Manrico wants to free Azucena and says goodbye to Leonora. During the liberation attempt Manrico is captured and sentenced to death.
Leonora visits Manrico in the dungeon and is shocked. Luna promises Leonora that he will release Manrico if Leonora marries him. Leonora agrees, but takes a deadly poison. Luna hears this and orders the execution of Manrico. Azucena has reached her goal and screams to him: “I have avenged my mother.”
