Handel in Aachen

In 1737, Handel’s health deteriorates rapidly in London. Stress and an unhealthy lifestyle lead to a stroke and a partial paralysis forces him to bed. Friends persuade him to take a cure in Aachen, and the Saxon giant goes to the spa town of Aachen-Burtscheid and undergoes a horse cure, imposing on himself a triple dose of spa activities. The cure and the pleasant climate of Aachen take effect and after a few weeks Handel’s physical and psychological condition improves drastically. Out of joy and gratitude, he surprises the churchgoers of the Abbey Church of St. John with an impromptu concert. From then on, the nuns speak of a miracle healing and praise God.
