Tchaikovsky in Clarens
Between 1877 and 1879, Tchaikovsky visited the idyllically situated Clarens on Lake Geneva 3 times. His patroness Nadezhda von Meck placed her Villa Richelieu at his disposal. The first visit came at a turbulent time, when shortly after his marriage he left his wife head over heels. During the three visits Tchaikovsky worked on his opera Eugene Onegin and with his lover the violinist Josef Kotek on the Violin Concerto.
The villa was situated directly on the lake next to a park. It was later turned into a hotel and later demolished in the 1970s, a Greek shipowner built a hotel on the site, the Royal Plaza Montreux Hotel.
