Handel in Oxford
In 1733, Handel spent a few days in Oxford. There he conducted the premiere of his oratorio “Athalia” in the beautiful Sheldonian Theater. This building is possibly the only surviving theater in which a Handel opera or oratorio was premiered.
There he declined an honorary doctorate offered to him, possibly because he would have been charged for it.
