Hector Berlioz in La Côte-Saint-André
Hector Berlioz was born in this village into a bourgeois family in 1803. His parents wanted him to become a doctor and could not accept his decision to become a musician for a long time.
Berlioz left La Côte-Saint-André at the age of 18 to study medicine in Paris. He later moved to the Conservatoire when he had his first success with his “Petite messe solennelle”. At the age of 27 he wrote his most famous work, the “Sinfonie fantastique” to conquer the heart of an Irish actress.

An interesting small museum has been set up in the house where Berlioz was born. The upper middle-class house has been restored and displays scores, musical instruments and paintings. The interior shows the lifestyle of the first half of the 18th century and gives a nice overview of Berlioz’s life.
