Hector Berlioz was born in this village into a bourgeois family in 1803. His parents wanted him to become a doctor and could not accept his decision to become a musician for a long time.

Berlioz left La Côte-Saint-André at the age of 18 to study medicine in Paris. He later moved to the Conservatoire when he had his first success with his “Petite messe solennelle”. At the age of 27 he wrote his most famous work, the “Sinfonie fantastique” to conquer the heart of an Irish actress.
