Bach was not allowed to experience the fame that he enjoys today. He was not granted triumphant concert tours, let alone wealth, like his contemporary Handel. At the end of his life he even had to realize that his musical style had gone out of fashion.
And yet Bach seems larger than life to us today. His music, his creative power, his sense of family and his unpretentious religiousness make us look up to him with admiration.
