The prison warden Dr. Frank appears, invited under the name of Chevalier Chagrin. With relish, Orlofsky introduces the two fake Frenchmen Renard and Chagrin to each other, and the two must converse in French. Last but not least, the masked Rosalinde alias Countess appears. She first catches sight of her husband and, to her astonishment, of Adele. Eisenstein alias Renard is introduced to the mysterious Countess and he immediately catches fire.
