All is fair in this comedy. Delightful how in this recording with Hermann Prey and Kiri te Kanawa, husband Eisenstein’s farewell to his wife is introduced with a quote from Die Walküre and segues into “O je wie rührt mich dies” where the two feign regret at the situation.

The “Clock Duet”
The prison warden Dr. Frank appears, invited under the name of Chevalier Chagrin. With relish, Orlofsky introduces the two fake Frenchmen Renard and Chagrin to each other, and the two must converse in French. Last but not least, the masked Rosalinde alias Countess appears. She first catches sight of her husband and, to her astonishment, of Adele. Eisenstein alias Renard is introduced to the mysterious Countess and he immediately catches fire. While he flirts with her, Rosalinde inwardly swears revenge. As proof, she gets hold of Eisenstein’s pocket watch.
This play is also known as the Watch Duet.

“Mein Herrn Marquis” – the dazzling performance of Adele
“Mein Herr Marquis, ein Mann wie sie” is one of the earworms of this opera. With a teasing waltz, the maid exposes her master with the words “No Herr Marquis a man like you should understand this better”.
