Travel tips for opera lovers – Paris and Mozart

Der erste Aufenthalt Mozarts in Paris war spektakulär. Auf ihrer grossen Westeuropareise besuchten die Mozarts im November 1763 Paris, bereits im Dezember wurden sie in Versailles eingelassen Wolfgang und seine Schwester Nannerl gaben schon im Dezember der Familie des französischen Königs Louis XV ein Privatkonzert und wurden am 1. Januar sogar ins private, königliche Speisezimmer (das grand couvert) eingeladen. Beim ersten Zusammentreffen wollte der 7-jährige Mozart die Pompadour noch stürmisch küssen, doch die wehrte die Avancen des galanten jungen Mannes ab. Mozart war darob irritiert, denn die Kaiserin Maria-Theresia hatte in Wien nichts dagegen gehabt…

Der zweite längere Besuch in Paris 15 Jahre später kehrte mit dem Tod seiner Mutter ins tragische Gegenteil. Vater Mozart wollte, dass sein Sohn in Paris im Schloss Versailles eine Anstellung findet. Weil Leopold keinen Urlaub bekam, machte Mozart sich mit seiner 57-jährigen Mutter im Winter auf den Weg nach Paris. Mozart, der kein Wort französisch sprach, holte sich dort aber eine Abfuhr nach der andern und wartete sich in den ungeheizten Vorzimmern die Füsse steif, während seine Mutter in der ungeheizten, billigen Absteige Hunger litt. Er konnte nicht verstehen, wieso sich niemand mehr für ihn in Paris interessierte. Ein paar Kompositionen und Klavierstunden halten sie mehr schlecht als recht über Wasser. Seine Mutter erkrankte im Juli und starb nach kurzer Krankheit in den Armen ihres Sohnes. Alleine musste Mozart zum Vater nach Salzburg zurückkehren.

Mozart’s first stay in Paris was spectacular. On their great trip to Western Europe, the Mozarts visited Paris in November 1763, and by December they were admitted to Versailles (see also below). The second longer visit turned into the tragic opposite with the death of his mother.

Wolfgang and Nannerl gave a private concert to the family of the French King Louis XV as early as December and were even invited to the royal dining room (the grand couvert) on January 1. At their first meeting, the 7-year-old Mozart wanted to kiss the Pompadour, but she rejected the advances of the gallant young man. Mozart was irritated by this, because the Empress Maria-Theresia had not given anything in Vienna…

Father Mozart wanted his son to find employment in Paris at the Palace of Versailles. Because Leopold did not get a vacation, Mozart set off for Paris in winter with his 57-year-old mother. Mozart, who didn’t speak a word of French, was rejected one after the other and waited in the unheated antechambers while his mother waited hungry in the unheated cheap flophouse. He could not understand why no one was interested in him in Paris anymore. A few compositions and piano lessons kept them more or less afloat. His mother fell ill and died in her son’s arms after a short illness. Alone, Mozart had to return to his father in Salzburg.
